Tony Goldwyn’s “Conviction” (** out of 4 stars) delivers that type of movie-going experience. What you see in the official synopsis is what you will see on the screen. Nothing more, and nothing less.

On the flip side, I had no idea what to expect from Mark Romanek’s “Never Let Me Go,” and now that it has screened, I’m still not 100-percent sure what I saw. Not having read Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, I went into “Never” cold … and stayed a little frigid as this poetic, literate love-triangle drama played out.

I’m going to refrain from spelling too much of “Never” out, as it’s true that the less you know about the mysterious plot, the better the film will play.

I don’t think it’s ruining anything to say Romanek – a music video creator who directed “One Hour Photo” with Robin Williams – has created a science-fiction story that’s rooted in reality and draws from the heart, not our imaginations. I’m jokingly referring to “Never” as “Blade Lovers,” though that’s not a slight. Just a summation.

Because it asks controversial emotional questions, “Never” deserves deeper consideration and can’t be judged with a “yay” or “nay” on a few hours of contemplation (from a very tired brain). I plan to revisit the film again before writing extensively about it. For me, the film’s emotional pull wasn’t as strong as I anticipated, and part of that has to do with the physical nature of the characters played by Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield. That statement will make a lot more sense once you’ve seen it. And see it, you should. There’s a lot to appreciate in “Never” … and plenty to discuss afterward.

HollywoodNews.com: Eminem has made a fantastic comeback the past few months with his top charting “Recovery” album going double platinum and his “Love the Way You Lie” single continuing to dominate the charts. While the singer has been very busy putting on two historic Home and Home Tour shows with Jay-Z, his accolades are about to get even better.

MTV announced earlier that he was going to be performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, but now they have just released the exciting news that the rapper will be opening the show. MTV general manger Stephen Friedman said, “We thought that there’s no better way to kick off the show than a performance from Eminem.”

Eminem is up for eight awards including Best Male Video and Video of the Year for “Not Afraid.”

The MTV Video Music Awards air this Sunday at 8 p.m.

HollywoodNews.com: Even though fanboys and girls have ventured back to college, Sony/Screen Gems and Summit Entertainment are looking to lure them back to the cinema this weekend.

Sony/Screen Gems unspools “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” the fourth installment in a series that’s based on the popular zombie videogame. Except for the first film which was a March entry, the rest of the series has played during the September frame.

And talk about creative commitment: while Paramount disabled its “Tomb Raider” franchise, also based on a vidgame, with Angelina Jolie after the sequel failed to live up to the first one’s $100 million-plus domestic B.O., “Resident Evil” has been running strong among cult fans for eight years. The last chapter, 2007’s “Resident Evil: Extinction” posted the franchise’s best bow with $23.7 million (also it’s the best domestic cume of $50.6 million) and “Afterlife” is gunning for a record thanks to its playability in 3D. “Afterlife” is also rated R, so expect real zombie guts to fly at the audience — in 3D.

Each “Resident Evil” film has been directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and has starred Milla Jovovich as the lead zombie hunter Alice. This time, she battles the Undead in Los Angeles. “Afterlife” will play at 2,909 theaters, 2,100 of which are 3D including 141 Imax runs in the cinema format.

“Afterlife” cost $60 million, with Sony nabbing domestic rights for $52 million.

To date, Rotten Tomatoes hasn’t registered any reviews on “Afterlife.”

The studio didn’t screen the film for many critics in an effort to secure young males, however, U.K.’s The Sun saw the film and yells, “Stupid, over the top but a lot of fun and, once again, ending with the promise of yet another sequel.”

While “Afterlife” is the only new wide release, Summit is seeking to push “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” past the $300 million mark this weekend with a rerelease of the threequel in 1,187 theaters. Why? In celebration of Bella’s birthday (the film’s main femme for those in the dark) which falls on September 13. Current cume for “Eclipse” stands at $298.8 million.

HollywoodNews.com: Danielle Staub has caused quick a scene on more than a handful of episodes of this season’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” After the explosive reunion show, the news quickly spread that she will not be returning for another season, and as much as we can’t stand her, we’re going to miss all the drama she’s continued to make so highly entertaining.

Staub recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the show and what she’s looking forward to in the future. On her departure from the show she said, “Well, I knew going into the reunion that I had really no reason to return. I had finished my memoir, my book was out, I’m hitting my marks, and I’m moving on and trying to move up. I don’t think there was anything left. Do I stay on a show where people really hate me? Where I don’t even think they know why?”

In terms of what is in store for the future, she says, “now it’s time for me to hit my next mark, which is to let the TV world have a fair portrayal of me. I’m going to get my own show. There’s many options on the table for that, and I’m looking into them.” She also adds that her music career is launching this month. “I’m releasing my first solo song, which is called ‘Cry,’ and it’s going to be attached to one of my most passionate charities, stopping domestic violence. It is going to be definitely one of the first times people are literally going to be able to hear and feel what it is like to be, not only mentally and sexually abused, or physically abused, but even in a relationship that went bad. The song is just so full of emotion and victory, and I’m very proud.”

However, at the end of the day she says, “I want to be just me.”

Starring Doc Shaw (The Suite Life on Deck) and Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana), Kings will premiere on Disney, then moves over to Disney XD, the company's more male-oriented station. Brandy and I are still hard at work on our dances. I feel like a broken record, but everything is going great. I have my game plan that I'm going to stick with. I've done this for so long now that I know that these three weeks of rehearsals can go one or two ways. If the person is not very good at picking up choreography, they need as much time as they can get. If they are more comfortable with dancing, moving their bodies and interpreting music, which is what dance is, they have an easier time obviously. If that person does have an easier time, what do you do with three weeks? We are just given our first two dances — Viennese waltz and the jive (not the cha-cha anymore!) — and I personally think it's pointless introduce the celebrities to more than that in the first three weeks.

In Brandy's case, she's doing very well. We just finished our Viennese waltz. It's great and good enough ...

HollywoodNews.com: The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired US rights to Sahamongkolfilm International’s “Ong Bak 3,” the third and final installment in one of the most beloved martial arts series of all time. International superstar Tony Jaa once again writes, directs and stars. Picking up at the cliffhanger ending where Ong Bak 2 leaves off, Jaa ramps up the epic supernatural elements of the previous film, while still maintaining the trademark bone-crunching action that the series is known for. This time he must face his ultimate enemy: a fierce supernatural warrior named “Demon Crow,” played by fellow martial arts sensation Dan Chupong (Dynamite Warrior). Eagerly anticipated by martial arts aficionados for some time, the matchup of Jaa and Chupong is explosive.

Since Tony Jaa was introduced to the US by Magnolia in 2005 in Ong Bak, he has grown to be the most beloved action import since Jackie Chan. Magnet released Ong Bak 2 in 2009, and will release ONG BAK 3 in theaters on January, 2011.

“Tony Jaa is undoubtedly the greatest martial arts star of our time,” said Magnet SVP Tom Quinn. “We’re thrilled to be taking our journey with Tony full circle by bringing ONG BAK 3 to his American fans.”

Quinn negotiated the deal with Sahamongkolfilm International’s Gilbert Lim.

HollywoodNews.com: Though the details are still under wraps, producer-director J.J. Abrams is hooking up with “Dark Knight” scribe Jonathan Nolan in a potential TV crime thriller series.

Word comes from EW and Collider.

The duo are currently shopping the series around and fanboys of Nolan are going nuts. They’ve often enjoyed Nolan’s gothic bent as seen in his brother Christopher’s work “Prestige” and “Memento.”

Should the series get greenlit, it will be Nolan’s first foray into TV.

Abrams is currently shopping around another drama series entitled “Alcatraz.” There’s also a lot of heat on his upcoming NBC sexy, urban action series “Undercovers” about a husband and wife who are reactivated as CIA agents. Series airs on September 22.

HollywoodNews.com: The series premiere of “Hellcats” accomplished something no other UPN or CW show has ever done, matched or built on its “Top Model” lead-in. “Hellcats” improved on the cycle 15 debut of “Top Model” in the key demographics, including 3% in total viewers (3.0mill), 26% in females 12-34 (2.4/7), 23% in persons 12-34 (1.6/5), 100% in female teens (3.2/11), 91% in total teens (2.1/7), according to Live Plus Same Day Nielsen ratings for Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010.

“Hellcats” retained 100% of its “Top Model” lead-in among women 18-34 (2.1/6) and adults 18-34 (1.4/4).

“Hellcats” delivered the largest non-”Top Model” performance in The CW’s Wednesday 9-10pm time period in 3 years (since 9/19/07, since “Gossip Girl’s” series premiere) among total viewers (3.0mil), and best non-Top Model delivery in over 2 years (since 4/3/08) among women 18-34 (2.0/6).

The younger-skewing “Hellcats” ranked first in the hour among total teens and female teens, and ranked second in the hour with females 12-34.

“Hellcats” also built at the half hour by 15% in adults 18-34, 5% in women 18-34, 8% in adults 18-49, 6% in women 18-49, 13% in persons 12-34 and 4% in females 12-34.

“Hellcats” dramatically improved over the series debut of TBL (which premiered here last year), blowing it away by 91% in women 18-34, 75% in adults 18-34, 100% in adults 18-49, 89% in women 18-49, 128% in persons 12-34, 140% in females 12-34 and 114% in total viewers.

With the debut of “America’s Next Top Model” and “Hellcats,” The CW stations in the majority of the top markets ranked either first or second on Wednesday night. Among women 18-34, The CW was first or second in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Washington DC, Houston, Phoenix, Seattle, Minneapolis, Miami, Cleveland, Orlando, Sacramento, Portland and Baltimore. HollywoodNews.com: Paramount Pictures, Participant Media and Walden Media announced today 60,000 people have pledged to see the award-winning documentary film “Waiting for ‘Superman’” when it opens this fall, making it the fourth goal reached on the campaign’s “Pledge Progress Meter.” As a result, First Book and global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) will distribute an additional $100,000 worth of new books to schools and programs in low-income communities across the country. First Book and HMH initially joined forces at the 50,000 level by donating 250,000 new books in a similar fashion. The books will be generously provided by HMH and distributed through First Book’s award-winning book distribution channels.

“We’re thrilled by the opportunity to continue our support of “Waiting for ‘Superman’”,” said Barry O’Callaghan, HMH’s Chief Executive Officer. “Together with First Book, we can use this opportunity to put better educational resources in the hands of the nation’s teachers and students.”

“Waiting for ‘Superman’”” directed by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) will be released under the Paramount Vantage banner and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It examines the crisis of public education in the United States through multiple interlocking stories. Designed to start a national conversation, the movie and corresponding “Take the Pledge” campaign aim to inspire everyone to create innovative and long-term solutions to help change the course of our kids’ lives for the better.

The “Pledge Progress Meter” launched in May as a way for non-profits, foundations and corporations to match individual pledge levels with powerful action items aimed at helping both students and public schools. First Book was the first organization to take the pledge.

The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 24, nationwide in October.

The film is produced by Lesley Chilcott, with Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll and Diane Weyermann serving as executive producers. It is written by Davis Guggenheim & Billy Kimball.

HollywoodNews.com: There was a rumor that Carla Bruni, the first lady of France, was replaced in Woody Allen’s film “Midnight in Paris” – however that’s just scuttle bucket.

News had arrived from a Parisian website Bakchich.info that Bruni, 42, was replaced by French actress Lea Seydoux (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Robin Hood”), who is nearly 20 years younger than the French first lady. U.K.’s Daily Mail reported that Seydoux, 25, reshot all of Bruni’s scenes.

Seydoux’s rep exclaims that the actress was merely added to the cast, but didn’t specify what part she was playing. The actress was recently in the running for the highly coveted part of Lisbeth Salander in the U.S. remake of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Word from the film’s publicist is that “Midnight in Paris” will premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival and mum’s the word as to who the entire cast is.

Allen’s romantic comedy ensemble “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” opens on September 22. “Stranger” stars Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Freida Pinto.

Making for ever-the-attractive family, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian took a well-dressed Mason Disick out on Fifth Avenue in New York City on Thursday (September 9).

HollywoodNews.com: Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too” debuted at number one on the DVD and Blu-ray sell through charts, selling over one million units in its first week of release. Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?,” which grossed $60 million during its successful theatrical run, reunites the charismatic cast and characters from the hit comedy/drama “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?,” with writer-producer-director Perry leading an all-star original cast including singer/actress Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Sharon Leal, Malik Yoba, Richard T. Jones and Michael Jai White.

The partnership between Lionsgate and Perry has proven successful across film, DVD and television. Perry has released nine films theatrically through Lionsgate since “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” in February 2005, and they have collectively grossed nearly $481 million at the North American box office. Lionsgate will be releasing Perry’s next two films, “For Colored Girls,” the big screen version of the landmark play, on November 5, 2010 and Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” the adaptation of the popular play, on April 22, 2011.

Additionally, Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury television syndication company has delivered 172 episodes of his highly successful television series, “House of Payne,” which is currently airing in a dual window on TBS and in Fox station group-led syndication. TBS also airs Perry’s second television series, “House of Payne” spin-off “Meet The Browns,” and will become a part of the Fox station group-led syndication next week.

The debut caps a strong run for Lionsgate in which the theatrical title “Kick-Ass” ranked first on the DVD, Blu-ray and digital charts when it debuted in August and its films “The Expendables” and “The Last Exorcism” have been among the leaders at the North American box office. “The Expendables” held the number one spot at the North American box office for two straight weeks and has now grossed more than $93 million, with the film opened at number one in the U.K. as well.

“Tyler Perry is truly one of the most original and successful voices in the entertainment world today,” said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate Home Entertainment General Manager and Executive Vice President. “His unique writing and powerful characters provide humor and heart that will continue to keep fans flocking to his movies for years to come. Not letting her latest legal woes slow her down, Britney Spears was spotted out and about in Los Angeles, California on Thursday afternoon (September 9).

Joined by her trusty bodyguard and assistant, the "Gimme More" singer grabbed up lunch at a local eatery as she went about the day's business.

As previously reported by GossipCenter, Miss Spears made headlines yesterday after a former bodyguard named Fernando Flores filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Brit Brit for allegedly causing emothinal distraught after exposing herself to him.

Of the situation, legal expert Michael Bononi tells MTV News, "What he's gonna have to show in making these allegations is that he was subjected to a hostile work environment, and it's gonna have to be hostile in two ways: one, that a reasonable person similarly situated would have been offended by the conduct and secondly that he was actually offended by the conduct."

Bononi adds, "What courts and what juries look [for] is: Did he act consistently with the way you would expect someone to act who was actually offended by this type of conduct? In other words, did he make complaints? Did he tell her to stop? Did he talk to his friends and colleagues? Is there corroboration that at the time this was happening it was actually bothering him, and are people going to come forward and be able to testify that at the time this stuff was transpiring, he was talking to them about it, talking about how offended if, at all, he was?"

In Treatment will return Monday, Oct. 25, with back-to-back new episodes, the network announced Thursday.

Hollywoodnews.com: A bleak start to the Toronto International Film Festival … not due to quality, but due to content. I don’t have time to dig too deeply into either film from this morning, as I’m running out the door to an evening double feature. But here are quick takes on the latest from Ben Affleck and Alejandro González Iñárritu:

The Town (*** out of 4 stars)
“The Town” confirms what “Gone Baby Gone” suggested: Ben Affleck can direct the hell out of a gritty, Boston-based crime thriller. Having seen “The Town,” I’m convinced Affleck has the talent to think outside the close-knit, scruffy neighborhoods of his beloved Boston. I’m just not sure I want him to drift too far from this (un)comfort zone, though, as it is rich in stories yet to be told.

The plot involves a team of bank robbers (led by Affleck) who question whether a pretty hostage (Rebecca Hall) can identify them. As Affleck gets close to this woman – and dreams of a better life outside the confines of the Charlestown neighborhood – a whip-smart FBI agent (Jon Hamm) draws ever closer to the robbers’ trail.

In one of the film’s note-perfect investigative scenes, Hamm says Affleck’s team can “plan and execute with sophistication and discipline.” I’d say the same about Affleck, who directs with a crisp, economic precision. Jeremy Renner, Hall and Chris Cooper (in a brief scene) show they’ve tapped into Affleck’s vibe. And while one or two script conveniences needed to be cleaned up, Affleck’s “The Town” comes across as a solid, riveting thriller from a gifted, gritty filmmaker.

Biutiful (***1/2 out of 4 stars)
“Biutiful” is a tough film to embrace. It will alienate a large number of people who aren’t interested in investing their time and attention in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s focus, which is death. I get that. Despite the title, “Biutiful” is anything but until the film’s final scene, which is transcendental … if you make it that far.

The glue holding it all together is Javier Bardem. The naturally handsome actor hides beneath a thick, impenetrable, and morose fog of uncertainty and despair to play Uxbal, a black-market dealer who is dying of cancer. Uxbal has a unique power. He can communicate with the restless spirits of the recently deceased. We’re interested because he’s a restless spirit, himself. Burdened by the knowledge that he has months left to live, Uxbal struggles to find a worthy caretaker for his two children before time runs out.

Bardem captivates as a man trying desperately to hold everything together as his world falls apart. He’s aided by Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose storytelling techniques bind “Biutiful” in distinct places even as the “Babel” director narrows his focus to one man and the impact of his actions. The director’s still interested in the global condition – particularly, how difficult it is to survive when poverty is consuming huge populations – and he manages once again to show us how we’re all connected.

But “Biutiful” works because it’s focus isn’t only on death, which would be an insufferable trudge. Yes, Iñárritu explores how we die in the film. He also, however, asks us how we live, and in those answers, we find the real beauty of “Biutiful.”

But since his arrest, AXE has said they’re “reviewing” their relationship with the rap star.

In a statement to CNN, the company explained that they partnered with T.I. “earlier this year for a promotional campaign” because they were “encouraged that the entertainer was working to become a more positive role model for others.”

But, the statement went on, “We are troubled by this arrest.” Out of a need to “preserve the legal process,” AXE said they would comment at a later time if necessary, but “In the meantime, we are reviewing our promotional activities.” The company added, "AXE is committed to respecting and upholding the law and promoting a positive image to consumers."

When reached for comment, T.I.’s rep said that the artist “had fulfilled his obligations to AXE shortly after the concert and prior to his arrest."

Caprica is returning to Syfy sooner than initially planned.

The images snapped at “X-Men’s” set depict January Jones as Emma Frost, aka the White Queen, rocking a retro look that included a short white coat, knee-high boots and a furry white hat. The pictures also caught what appears to be her stunt double wearing a matching outfit and haircut.

And although Chris Evans is the star in “Captain America,” it was his stunt double that was captured by cameras on the film’s London-area set and obtained by U.K. paper The Daily Mail. The stunt double was decked out in the iconic costume, complete with helmet and shield, and riding out on a period motorbike.

The costume seems to hold true to the expectations Evans set for it when he chatted with MTV in July. "It's not this sleek spandex suit,” Evans explained. “It looks like something you might wear in the '40s in the middle of a war."

But it also looks like the heroic character will have a few iterations of his classic costume. “He's used in different areas, so he has different stages of the suit,” Evans told MTV. “I don't think he actually jumps into the final suit until the third act of the film.”

The movie has been filming since June and is slated to arrive in theaters next July.

Just one day removed from her courthouse scolding, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has spoken out about her time in front of the Seaside Heights, NJ judge.

Found guilty of a misdemeanor charge, the "Jersey Shore" star was dubbed as "rude, profane, obnoxious and self-indulgent" while getting a $500 fine and community service hours.

Since that time, Snooki issued an apology for her behavior while also criticizing Judge Damian G. Murray for comparing her to Lindsay Lohan.

Of the LiLo comparison, Miss Polizzi tells, "I definitely thought it was harsh. I never drank and drove, I don't do drugs – I do nothing that Lindsay does, so it was definitely a little overboard."

Nonetheless, Snooki's glad to be moving past her drunken beach display, as she tells, "I'm just really happy that it's over and that the criminal charge was dismissed because that was just insane. I was really nervous about it."

"I'm just really happy it's over," Nicole adds. "That was crazy for me."

HollywoodNews.com: As Joe Jonas reportedly heats up his relationship with ‘Twilight’ star Ashley Greene, it is being alleged that he may be a little less interested in sticking to his purity ring.

The two have reportedly been spotted dating and are allegedly spending quite a bit of time together when they aren’t working, states Hollyscoop. The young stars might even be spending so much time together that they are allegedly “basically living together.”

All three of the Jonas brothers wear purity rings, but it may appear that Joe isn’t so serious about it since getting involved with Ashley.

Taking a break from her strenuous schedule, Miley Cyrus was spotted heading into Panera Bread for some lunch in Studio City, California on Thursday (September 9).

The “Can’t Be Tamed” babe donned an interesting outfit consisting of a black romper and high socks as she and her brother Braison hurried into the eatery.

This week rumors have been swirling around Ms Cyrus and her “LOL” co-star, Douglas Booth, after the two were spotted being rather flirtatious in Paris and while arriving back at LAX Airport last night.

However, an insider source tells E! Online that the two are simply good friends and that Miley is “not dating anyone.”

Gearing up for a new album just in time for the holidays, Josh Groban has released the first song off of his upcoming disc titled Illuminations.

Produced by Rick Rubin, the 29-year-old singer's debut tune "Hidden Away" gives a taste of what's to come when the full album finds release this November.

Hoping to get a warm reception from his many dedicated fans and new listeners, as well, Groban sent out a little message with his "Hidden Away" release.

He writes, "I am very excited for everyone to hear my single, Hidden Away! This is the opening track off my new album, Illuminations, coming in November. After so many months of work, I can't wait to finally share this music with all of you. Look for more updates coming soon!"

Franco opened up to ‘The Advocate’ and revealed that if he were gay, he would say so because affecting his career wouldn’t deter him from that decision, states Just Jared. And because he has played gay roles in his career, he finds that people think that’s who he is, just like the fact that he played a stoner role and now he is assumed to be a stoner.

But just because he is dealing with these beliefs from fans doesn’t mean he will stop playing these roles: “In this history of cinema, there are so many heterosexual love stories. It’s so hammered, so done. It’s just not that interesting to me.”

In the ongoing case of he said, she said, Leonardo DiCaprio's alleged attacker plead not guilty in a Los Angeles courtroom earlier today (September 9).

Aretha Wilson is accused of attacking the “Inception” star at a Hollywood Hills party after supposedly mistaking DiCaprio for an old boyfriend.

According to E!, the actor suffered a gash on his neck and near his ear, which took 12 stitches to close and - before the authorities could grab her - Wilson skipped town.

DiCaprio has indicated his willingness to testify against her at her upcoming trial - which begins on October 13th. If convicted, Aretha could face up to seven years in prison.
